Annual report writing can be challenging. Each part of the organisation presents its report in their own words and style, with different lengths and in variable tone.

Working with your in-house team, I can help create or edit content to highlight your achievements and outcomes. Then we can streamline the report so it has an effective structure. I want to highlight your organisation’s achievements and impact.

What is an annual report?
Annual reports provide an overview of the company’s financial and operational performance from the previous reporting period, generally the financial year.
They have been a standard form of reporting for more than a century, according to CPA Australia, which describes their role as “the primary source of trustworthy, independently verified information provided by listed companies to their investors and other stakeholders”.
Writing an annual report is an important task that provides stakeholders with a comprehensive overview of an organisation’s performance, achievements, and possibly, future plans.
For some organisations, it is a regulatory requirement. For others, it is an opportunity to inform the public and those with an interest in the organisation of key updates throughout the year.
The format of an annual report can vary depending on the organisation and its specific requirements, but there are common elements in addition to the financial requirements that are often included.
These are company highlights or an executive summary, a Board Chair report, Chief Executive Officer report, operational reports, and ESG reporting. Financial reporting and a directors’ statement is also a requirement for public companies.
Annual report formats
The annual report format should be tailored to the individual organisation. A privately held company may not need too much more detail than the financials, complemented by a description of the operations. A listed entity, however, will require a directors’ report ( including a remuneration report), a corporate governance statement (or the URL of the homepage on the company’s website where the statement is located), the financial reports and an auditor’s report on the financial and remuneration reports.
A common structure is:
- Cover page
- Table of contents
- Executive summary or key highlights
- Provide a brief introduction to the organisation, its mission, vision, and values.
- Share any significant milestones or developments that have occurred during the year.
- Board Chair report: Outline the strategic plan and the implementation to date
- CEO report
- Operational highlights
- Major accomplishments, projects, or initiatives
- Include possible case studies if relevant
- ESG overview: Highlight any environmental, social, or governance initiatives
- Financial statements: Detailed statements, such as balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements
Writing an annual report
Before you start to write the annual report, it is important to confirm the purpose, audience and key messages. Determine the theme of the report, and the main messages you want to convey. Highlight significant achievements, milestones, challenges, and strategies for the future.
Write in a clear, concise, and jargon-free manner. Avoid using overly technical terms that may confuse non-experts. Use bullet points, subheadings, and visuals to enhance readability. Good graphic design can add significant value and improve the readability of the report.
Highlight your impact.
